Need advice on an endmill.

Post by chambrot » Tue Oct 14, 2014 7:29 pm

I am looking for some advice on what endmill I need to

I need to cut some 8mm - 10mm thick HDPE plastic like what
cutting boards are made of. I have been using a 1/8" 1-flute and 2-flute
endmill and it has worked out great, but I am looking for something a bit
thinner like a 1/16". There are some parts that I need to cut out that have
areas that are 2mm or smaller. I see there are endmills thinner than 2mm,
but they dont seem to be long enough.

Does this exists? If so, Is there
anything that you can recommend?

Thanks in advance,

I have 1/32", single flute endmills (with an 1/8" shank), as well as a couple that are about 0.063" and 0.0938" diameter if I recall. I had issues with double flutes and plastic, so I've stuck with single flute and had decent success. You're right on the cutting length though, the 1/32" endmills have a LOC of about 0.1", the 0.063" have a LOC of about 0.2" and the 0.0938" has a LOC of 0.375" or so.

Long story short, it's going to be difficult to find endmills that small (2mm) with that long (10mm) of a length of cut (LOC). You'll either need to look into drill bits, finishing by hand, or finding a way to modify your design.

As I mentioned above, my 0.0938" diameter (about 2.4mm) has a LOC of 0.375" (~9.5mm), but I have never cut that deep, so I am not sure if it tapers some as you move up the endmill.

Good luck!
