Depth Rings / Distance Rings

Post by jbc » Mon Jan 11, 2016 6:57 pm

Is there a source for 1/4" depth rings out there that allow me to add a depth ring to my end mill?

I have end mills that don't have them. I'm looking to source some rings that I can add on the end mill and possibly remove and reuse once that end mill is worn.
Ideally they would have both the 1/4" and 1/8". I found a source for the 1/8" but not for 1/4" end mills.
I looked at set screw collars but thought there might be a balance issue when spinning at high speeds possibly affecting the Dewalt's bearings over time.

Thanks for any help.

You have a CNC machine, you could make some :)

I wanted some too so I made some for my 1/8" and 1/4" end mills out of brass (lathe and mill). I was pretty impressed with myself until I found pretty much the same ones in steel at my local Ace Hardware, a 1/4 mile down the road. Doh! They are precise and fit my bits rather snuggly. I think they are called lock collars or something. I made mine with 2 set screws. The Ace ones have one set screw.

Most of the ones I'm finding online are made for drill bits, and so come in a set of several diameters. If you know of a place that sells just 1/4 or 1/8 inch versions, I wouldn't mind hearing about it.

As noted, any hardware store will sell shaft collars — but I wouldn’t want even soft steel up against cutting surface of my endmills. Okay if you put them on from the other end I guess.

maybe a dumb question, but what is the use of those rings?

Depth rings allow repeatable vertical positioning of an endmill when changing bits.

I saw something like that on the web but wondered if the screws that hold them in place would cause more bearing wear.
If they don't I found a place that sells them for around .65¢ each.

So once you have some loose rings, what is a reliable way to set them on the mills to a precise length/depth for repeatable tool changes?

They could very well cause bearing wear but it's nothing that I'm concerned about. Ive only used mine a few times. I also have some that I 3D printed but Ive not tried them yet. They fit really nicely.
