Be VERY careful with those larger metal depth collars. All the ones I've seen are made for drills and much lower RPM than what most routers slowest speed is. They could cause bearing damage or be a safety concern if they are unbalanced enough.

I use a depth gauge. Put collar on end mill, place it upside down in a plate with either a 1/8 or 1/4 hole. Zero the gauge on the plate surface and then touch off on the top of the end mill.

I had heard that and with your comment I will continue the search for the plastic fit on rings.

Let me know if you find any for the 1/4" size! Think and tinker sell them for the 1/8"...
