Using Xbox controller as a pendant - Success

Post by Chembro » Wed Jun 08, 2016 6:30 pm

I know this has been done before more than likely, but I figured I'd share what I have.

With a little bit of playing around, I was able to program different buttons on the XBOX One controller to be a wireless pendant for my Shapeoko3 machine.

Right now, there aren't many keyboard shortcuts inside carbide motion, but as they release new functions in the software I'll update my profiles.

Includes:
Jogging
Increment select
Homing(Kinda)
Mouse controls

Hopefully in later updates of carbide motion they will release pause feed, resume feed and reset cycle. As of build 357 these are not included in carbide motion.

The program that I used is called Keysticks. It allows you to dedicate different functions to each button on the controller.

The Profile that I'm using can be downloaded here:

Total cost to use:
Wireless XBOX controller - Free since I kept it when I sold my XBOX ( I knew it would come in handy)

Wireless XBOX One USB Dongle- $25

Keysticks $15

It's A little pricey if you don't already have a controller but they can be picked up used for way cheaper and you can also use older controllers from possibly the 360 or PS3-4

That's awesome. Now you can use it as a manual 'mill' lol

You could to an extent.

The biggest issue would be a reliable feed rate. The increments provided in Carbide Motion are what the controller is programmed to use.

It's really no different than using a keyboard, but in small spaces a full sized keyboard and mouse take up a lot of space. When setting zeros I would always end up balancing it on my lap and using the mouse intermittently to select the increments.

It wasn't very stream line and was quite clunky. Now it's a breeze (:

I think I can use joytokey to remap my 360 controller to the appropriate jogging keyboard keys. I'll have to test it out.

You can probably use my keysticks profile for your 360 controller
