Homing switch wiring for xxl confusion

Post by drummer412 » Sun Jan 15, 2017 5:12 am

Do I run all 3 homing switch wires through both sets of drag chains? Also, I have no clue where these get plugged in. The assembly instructions I received seem to have left these steps out. Any help (in simple vocabulary) would be greatly appreciated.

Please accept our apologies for that. The instructions for the Shapeoko 3, XL, and XXL in their current state leave a lot to be desired.

The instructions from when the homing switches were a kit are at: http://docs.carbide3d.com/article/67-sh ... stallation

We have a bit about this sort of thing on the wiki: http://www.shapeoko.com/wiki/index.php/ ... structions (including the afore-mentioned links).

and there's the beginning of a set of instructions which I envisioned being written by the community at: http://www.shapeoko.com/wiki/index.php/ ... structions --- but apparently there will be a new set of official instructions being worked up presently.

That said, I really think the community can do better --- I believe that the SO2 instructions are the best set for any opensource machine: http://shapeoko.github.io/Docs/ (but yeah, I'm not biased)

If you'd like to work with us on improving the instructions here/on the wiki, I'd be grateful.

If you look carefully, the pins for homing switches are labeled on the control board. The writing is pretty small but it is there. Look at the open set of pins in the upper right. I think it's the leftmost half dozen.

The issue I had is if you run the wiring through the drag chains, none of the homing switch wires are actually long enough to plug in. My XXL has just had the wires dangling out the end since I built it.

Thanks for the replies! So I can leave all of the homing switch wires out of the drag chains and just route them out of the way, correct? Apologies for not looking closer at the control board. I have it on the floor at the moment (stupid) and can barely read anything on it. What would happen if the homing switches were left off completely?

@Will I think more diagrams showing routing methods for wiring would be really helpful. The pictures show how to route them around the switches and axis plates, but they neglect to show where they go after that. Someone like me who is brand new to this worries about wiring getting caught up in machine movements. Another thing I noticed (which has probably been addressed) is that the assembly instructions from the forum have better pictures than the emailed instructions, but the wiring section diagrams do not have any wording to go along with them. The majority of my build time (several hours at this point) has been going back and forth between the two sets of instructions to make sense of it all.

Yeah, the wiring stuff is hard --- one of the reasons it's a mess on the SO2 instructions is when I first did the machine I didn't have a wiring diagram. Then, the guy they hired to do the SO3 instructions whined when I pointed out a bunch of typos &c. --- if you need a break and want to see how I feel about such, please see https://www.reddit.com/r/woodworking/co ... m/d0uy8fj/ and https://www.reddit.com/r/typography/com ... _of_henry/ and the github log for the changes to the SO2 instructions (which I'm kind of sad no one has ever looked through and commented on, but maybe I didn't do the descriptions right or something)

I put everything inside the drag chain

--- you do know that they pop open, right?

There's a labeled diagram somewhere on the page I linked....

I meant to point out that the picture for opening up the drag chain is after the step for routing the wires through the first one. Luckily I caught this after 30 minutes of extreme swearing. That picture should be before the first step, IMO. I read through the directions before putting things together, but I don't believe that step is on the emailed version. I will go ahead and run the homing wires through the drag chains and see how that works out. Should I just use the sharpie to mark each end to avoid confusion when hooking them up to the control board, or is there a simpler way?

Use a Sharpie, I'll move that now.

Thanks again for bailing me out. I will have it running by tonight, even if it ends my marriage.

I know you're joking, but please, no. The wife is far more important than the machine (I usually wait until mine has left the house to do work).

(Even though that relationship is disparagingly mentioned in http://www.shapeoko.com/wiki/index.php/ ... f_ShapeOko)
