The muttering started when I told her she would have to help me move it (jokingly, of course). My idea of amusement is apparently different than hers.

I have the same problem --- fortunately, also a 17 year old son --- and in the next year or so will have to mount his XL on a dolly for outside cutting.

Re: Homing switch wiring for xxl confusion
Just noticed the control board featured in the Carbide homing switch document is different than the one on my machine. Do the homing switches plug into spots labeled X Limit, Y Limit, and Z Limit? I thought homing and limit switches were different.

Yes, they plug into the limit switch spots. Limit and homing is functionally different, but your switches actually pull double duty on the Shapeoko. The limit switches for back (Y-Axis), right (X-Axis) and all the way up (Z-Axis) are also where the machine homes to.

Yes, they plug in there.
Homing / limit switch terminology is a bit strange. Fundamentally the same, the differences are:
- homing switches only exist at one corner and are used to determine the initial machine position
- homing switches may be used to enable soft limits which sort of allow them to be termed limit switches (stretching here...)
- limit switches exist at one or both ends of a machine's travel and sound an error if hit during operation --- they may also be used at one corner to determine home (at a certain safe offset from them --- on the Shapeoko the default for that is 5mm, I believe)
More on the wiki of course: http://www.shapeoko.com/wiki/index.php/ ... t_Switches

As far as I know, I have everything set up correctly and will run the Hello World program tomorrow. Here's hoping for a smooth first run!
Re: Homing switch wiring for xxl confusion
I just built my shapeoko XXL last might and had the same issue with wires not being long enough. I undid wiriring and re-did the wiring several times before I noticed in the instructions "Remove 12 links" turns out the drag chain was too long, you need to take off 12 of the links from the y axis drag chain. All the wiring should be long enough. I misinterpreted these instructions ...I thought it meant removing the 12 covers from the drag chain to expose the wiring.

Yeah, the instructions could use some work (we're working on a new set).
remove 12 for the XXL and 20 for the XL --- I've updated the wiki on this.
EDIT: had numbers reversed

Re: Homing switch wiring for xxl confusion
I never saw anything about 20. I only removed 12 for my XXL and it seems to be working fine. Should I remove the other 8 or just go as is?
