Purchased used S3, are there versions?

Post by cgallery » Sat Apr 01, 2017 10:05 pm

Hello. I purchased a Shapeoko 3 w/ Dewalt router on craigslist. It is the standard size, I know it isn't the XL or XXL. But I figured I'd print the instructions and go through the setup to make sure things were done properly, when I discovered there may be some slightly different versions?

Is there a way to tell which manual I should be using?

Also, I didn't get any software with the unit, can I download that somewhere?

Yes, there are two (three) major versions for the Shapeoko 3:

- Shapeoko 3 launch edition --- this has 6mm belts, a 2-piece wasteboard, cross straps under the wasteboard, flat black for the Z-axis spindle carriage, 6mm belts, an early rev. board, and an aluminum sheet metal enclosure sans top or bottom --- please see https://www.shapeoko.com/wiki/index.php ... o_3_Launch for details and use http://carbide3d.com/files/so3manual.pdf for assembly / maintenance, though the Sparkfun instructions should work as well
- Sparkfun Stepoko --- as above, save the board is an opensource Stepoko board, and the enclosure is Sparkfun's red box, and it's red, see https://www.sparkfun.com/stepoko
- Shapeoko 3 Summer 2016 --- Z-axis spindle carriage plate has rounded edges (can be purchased here: https://shop.carbide3d.com/products/sha ... axis-plate ), 9mm belts (included in the maintenance kit: https://shop.carbide3d.com/collections/ ... enance-kit ), steel sheet metal enclosure, one piece wasteboard (cross straps not needed).

See https://www.shapeoko.com/wiki/index.php/B.O.M. for an overview.

Recommend that you test out the electronics with the trim router at its highest setting --- if you get a disconnect and the recommendations at: https://www.shapeoko.com/wiki/index.php ... mendations don't help, then you either want a new revision board or a USB isolator. For the former, send in an e-mail to support before placing your order and we'll see that you receive a purchase link for the board (it, like the Z-axis upgrade plate) is on a hidden page).

For software, please see:

- https://www.shapeoko.com/wiki/index.php ... l_Software

Also, there are a bunch of introductory e-mails (I guess I should arrange to get a set) which get one started with the machine --- I believe all the links from those are at: https://www.shapeoko.com/wiki/index.php/Carbide_3D --- but if you'd like to receive them, send an e-mail to support@carbide3d.com

Please let us know if there's anything else which you need!

Welcome to the Shapeoko/Carbide3D family!
