How would you extend the wiring of the stepper motors? I was thinking small wire nuts ... any other suggestions ?

Could splice the two wires together (stepper's and the extension), and then wrap it in heat-shrink. Check out the section on this page about Butt Soldering.

Thanks!

"Butt/Barrel Crimp Connectors" seems cleaner.

I wouldn't use Crimp connectors or wire nuts anywhere wire is subjected to motion (they are fine where wires are static).
Since the CNC introduces vibration, dust, and flex into the mix, I'd opt for heat-shrinked, soldered, Western Union Splices.

Thanks! I learned that method in high school :) long time ago... (went to Grady in NY)

Um... i guess that and some heat shrink will do :)
