Raspberry Pi Wifi Remote-controlled gcode sender

Post by pmodiano » Sun Nov 24, 2013 3:14 am

I decided to liberate my laptop from my basement, where my loud, dusty Shapeoko resides. So I set out to build a solution that would combine my Arduino/gbrl with a WiFi-enabled, RDP-enabled Raspberry Pi to create a single solution allowing me to remote into my Shapeoko from anywhere in my house with computer or tablet. I also set out to document my project.

More is to come shortly!

Very cool!

I worry about remote operation though --- w/ my luck, the first time I did it, the bit would work loose, dig into the spoil board and sit there and spin until it started a fire --- you'll also add a webcam so that you can keep an eye on it?

Add a Raspberry Pi camera they are only $25.00 and you can look at your machine anytime.

Will / Bob,

I bought the Raspberry Pi camera, with this thought in mind. The problem is it has a short ribbon cable that attaches to the raspberry pi. So if I want to go that route, I need to keep the R-Pi with camera right next to, and travelling with the tool. This means a long USB cable to the Arduino/grbl controller. Another issue is that I have no knowledge of how capturing and sending video live over wifi will impact the XRDP and the gcode sender. Maybe I need another dedicated raspberry Pi? Maybe I should use an inexpensive but completely separate monitoring system?

I need to give this video idea more thought...
