Nema 23 upgrade power supply

Post by oskanaan » Fri May 29, 2015 4:37 am

Hi guys,

I want to upgrade my motors from the default nema 17 to the nema 23. I've purchased 3 nema 23 (2 phase, 2.5 Amps motors, 156 oz/in) with the required hardware to mount them to my shapeoko 2. I havent started the upgrade yet but was wondering about the electornics, would they work well with the grblshield? I've read some QA over the inventables page and they said that it will work but I wont be getting the full torque out of it, but would it still be better than the Nema 17?

If it requires another dc power supply, would a 12/48 vdc 300watt power supply work with the motors/gshiled with no issues? I understand that a 24vdc power supply is recommended but since I can set the current to 24VDC (300 watt/24VDC = 12.5) would this be good enough?

Is there a blog post or a page with comprehensive info about the upgrade?

Thanks!

Hey there!

I also used 10A 24VDC power supply from Meanwell, and it worked perfectly!

Your power supply is more than enough.

The gShield will not be able to drive those motors at their rated torque, but, indeed, they will be better than the NEMA 17. You may get better results if you wire the two Y motors in series, rather than parallel.

Thanks guys, I've wired the grlb shield to the power supply and changed the output voltage to be just about 24 v. I ran a test and everything is working fine.

What does it mean to wire the Y motors in series? I switched a couple of wires as in the tutorial on the inventables website.

Just for the record. I've been running my machine using the 48vdc power supply set to produce 24vdc for a while now with no issues. I am upgrading the z-axis to use a nema23 motor next week so will see how it goes also.
