nema 17 heat problem

whats the best way to cool down the nema 17 motors?
The ambient temp is around 90F and i have thermal shut at every job, also cooling the air is not a potion for my shop at the moment...

whats the best heat sinks, fans , and config of eater... would be awesome to put a radiator like a h100 with custom blocks on the motors :o :lol:

but whats the most cost effected cooling for this :?:

Are you certain it’s the motors shutting down and not the stepper drivers?

- active cooling --- get a fan
- adjust the current, turn it down as much as makes sense

I use small 12volt fans attached to heat sinks. The ones you see used on graphics card.s. They will lower the temperature approximately 20 degrees.

I'm with Will here, I've cut jobs that lasted over 2 hours and never once have my 17's shut down...

also i have all ready adjusted the pots on the driver board, but still gettting a shut down....

The motors themselves do not have any sort of temperature sensing or overheating cut-out. They can go fairly hot (hotter than you can keep a finger on for more than a second) before they're in danger. If they cut out, it's the drivers that overheat, and cooling the motors will not make a difference. You can reduce the current a little to reduce the motor and driver temperature, but it also reduces torque. What you need is better cooling of your drivers (gShield or whatever you're using). Try to get airflow both over and under the board (e.g. with a fan placed to one side).
