Thanks twforeman! I've lurked a lot of your posts here and there. I use a solid state laser that's good for two watts. I posted about it under build log "Another Red Shapeoko". As far as a controller, I just built a box that has a 4pdt 24 vdc relay in it. I put a pair of jacks to connect my DC power supply which I vary in current according to use. The jacks connect thru a steering diode, to the relay which shorts the laser diode when not in use. The relay is controlled by the M3 and M5 commands which are broke out by my G540. I ruined one diode by cycling the power supply so I don't do that anymore. I cut foam for building fishing handles and I also engrave fishing rods with it. 2 watts really limits what you can do. I haven't tried engravoply or the like but etching in wood and corks goes well. Will not do anodized aluminum. My laser is a blue wavelength so the color of material affects power required. Even though it is 2 watts, you still need glasses, believe me.

Nice! (I have got to get all this freelance stuff out of the way so I can put my machine to work)

What was your feed rate? (for the wiki)

Feed rate was 150mm, not fast but I ain't either. Probably could go 200 easy. Get back to milling! lol

Pretty much dead on, 0.8mm. Once again not too speedy but I like to break up my passes by a multiple.

That's pretty cool. Have you tried doing the autozero with your spindle and a tool?
