Designed my own drag chain and arduino mounts

Post by fjohn624 » Sun Sep 14, 2014 10:09 pm

I know there are a lot of drag/cable chain mounts out there already. But the only ones I was able to find seemed to all use the universal open source chain designed for 3D printing. I liked the design but I really can't see investing the time, plastic, or energy in printing every link for my machine and then when I want to increase the work area of my machine to 1M x 1M, then I have to print even more! So I decided I would rather just buy some cable chain and make my own end pieces to mount it.

I started by buying some of this:
http://amzn.com/B007Q84IFM
It is 10x15mm x 1M drag chain from Amico for just over $8.
I had used it on other projects like my 3D printer and it is good stuff for the price.

I designed and re-designed each mount a few times. I was left with a mount for attaching the arduino and gshield to the side of the gantry, a mount which attaches one end of the Y axis chain to that mount, the matching mount for the other end of the Y, and then 2 X axis chain mounts.

If you would like to try to use these, the finished versions of these parts can be downloaded from here:

Feel free to leave some feedback on how I should improve them.

Elegant!

Did you also do limit switch mounts?

Yes and no. I did some of them.

The ones on the X-axis I took from:
http://www.thingiverse.com/thing:328379
because although I had made some originally, I liked these better.

The Z-axis ones are a work in progress. I took the basic design from:
http://www.thingiverse.com/thing:439373
but I don't think they have really finished the design because they don't seem to line up correctly on some parts. I am still working on revising part of their design for one of them. I can post those as a remix when I am done.

The Y-axis are completely my own design because I mounted the switches to the gantry so that they move with it and the wires never have to leave the gantry because the arduino is mounted on the other side. I can post those if any one is interested. I can do another thread with completed models for those.
