twforeman's Shapeoko 3 Build Log

Post by twforeman » Wed Apr 15, 2015 8:34 pm

My Shapeoko 3 arrived today. I took some 'unboxing' photos for the start of my build log. I won't be able to work on it for a little while yet.

There will be more photos and notes later.

But I finally have my machine worrking pretty well. I will have to wait for S4. Cheers TF, hope you have fun with the build.

Yeah, but it’s not quit as cool as the black and silver box for the ShapeOko 1.

Got some more work done last night. It's all assembled excluding the drive belts. It should be up and running this evening.

I saw that post, I'll give that a try. I also downloaded the app that checks the tension via sound, so I'll see how that goes.

I may end up making some other tensioning system if I don't like the way this works out. And 9mm belts might be an option down the road.

Got far enough to run the S2 Hello World today. Still need to tidy the wiring and figure out limit switches. I'm embarrassed to admit how many times I crashed the machine into the stops just moving it around. Between the machine being turned 90 degrees (so X is Y and vice versa) and forgetting to tell it to run in incremental mode...

Anyway. Shot a video of the Hello World. There will be more stuff on the blog later.

I used some spiral cable wrap for the wiring.

Almost bought some 3/8" flexible cable split loom wrap, but it seemed too large (so’s the spiral stuff, may try wrapping it tighter, or reinforcing it w/ zip ties) — looking a bit it seems 1/4" is made, I think that would be a better size.

Here is a hint of things to come. I'm working on installing limit switches and plan to make a kit available as soon as I get all the details worked out.

I'm 3D printing the mounts, but still trying to get really good prints out of my printer...
