So after building a cheap 3D printer, I decided I needed to spends hundreds of dollars to build a desktop CNC to cut parts required to upgrade and make this cheap printer better! go figure :-) sometimes I wonder how I lived to be this old... hehehehe I admit I like building stuff and learning in the process.

So my cheap printer the ANET A8, was build from an open source kit (based on Prusa I3), So i looked at the CNC open source available and decided to go the shapeoko way and to make things more interesting and possbily cheaper, I opted not to buy a kit. I Printed out parts in ABS plastic, I localy sourced the métal plates from a laser cutting shop, purchased makerslide extrusion and wheels from Inventables, and the remainder I bought from aliexpress, Amazon, and a local hobby shop (Futur Energies, Verdun Quebec), always going for the cheapest price, and would upgrade later if required / needed.

After 6 months and a lot of wating for shipping I have 1000 X 1000 machine that is working, you can see some of the build on OpenBuilds, at this link

This was before I started hanging out here on the Shapeoko formus :-) On a side note, my summer hobby is Kayaking, so I figured I could also use this CNC to carve out a Greenland Paddle, thus the build name and directions noted in the openbuild listing, more to follow on this.

My Shapeoko2, runs a cloned arduino U3 and V3 Cnc Shield (also clone), GRBL 1.1, UGCS front end. I have a cheap dremel knockoff whom I had laying around as a spindle.

The spindle will be my first upgrade. Currently looking at a used Bosh Colt (70$) and / or a new Dewalt 660 clone, I must like to complicate things for myself hehehehe! More to follow on this as well.

Random Alarms / stoppages

I've gotten random stoppage, So after reading several possible causes I did a séries of test, to try to pinpoint the source of the problem.

Set up 10min job, raised the Z - 0, 2 inches above material

test -1 - dry run, no pwer to spindle, no power tu dust collection (vacuum) - SUCCES
test - 2 - dry run spindle on, dust collector off - SUCCES
test - 3 - dry run, spindle on, dust collector on - SUCCES

so that went well, but no indication on what was causing my alarms etc.......

test - 4 - Lets cut!, spindle on, dust collector on - Random ALARMS... */"($&/($&* ....again but noticed lots of static electricity on dust collector hose, (dust particle standing straight and alligned on tips of hose) hmmm could this be it

test - 5 - more cutting - re-run last job, Spindle and dust collector on ! - after 5 minutes, touched the metal part of my dust collector hose, ZAP get a static discharge, and BAM, alarm is triggered!

So I need to ground or reduce / eliminate de static build-up caused by the dust travailling in the hose, on the dust collection system..!!

Well at least I know where to start, more to follow...

You can upload pictures of your machine here...

This is a custom machine, not from a kit?
Where does the #7354 come from?

Yep, not a kit, home build shapeoko, pretty much same specs, for the number I improvised, searched forums and took the last number plus one, probly not an issue since I don't think they sell 2's anymore, if it is I will change it.

I will add some pictures soon, since my la last post I've added belt tensionners for the X axis. I think I had loose belt chatter / deflection on cuts caused by this, or a loose Z axis plate, I will probly re-build the Z axis, if the tighter X and Y belts don't resolve the issue.

I am currently using GT2 steel wire belts, very little flex... don't know if it's better or not yet!

Installed 500w spindle, worked on noise suppression (ferrite core, twisting cables and shielding) test cut my work Logo, 25 min job, no stoppages or problems :D

Short video of spindle cutting MDF

Next on my list, clean up and finalise my control box, and work on dust collection system

You can't just post a video of your machine cutting something.

We want feed speed, cutting depth, overlap, size and type of endmill, and how many flutes.

We want DETAILS!

Fair enough!

Feed rate : 30 in/min
plunge rate : 9 in / min
cut per pass : 0.028 inches
step over : 40%
End mill : HQMaster 1/8" Carbide Flat Nose, Double Flute :

Very safe settings, slowly fine tuning and testing my machine

That's not much faster than what I cut through Aluminium with...

You're getting pretty close to friction-burn territory with that.

Take a scrap piece of material and run some zig-zag cuts on it, and look for distortions, then back down 20 - 25% on the speed from where you notice the distortions, and you should be good to go.
