Exporting .dxf from Solidworks 2012 to CamBam

Post by Terrean » Thu Mar 07, 2013 3:39 am

Just wanting to know if anyone has had any luck with exporting .dxf or .stl files from Solidworks into CamBam.

I'm trying to get a word of two from the community on any successes before I spend $150 on CamBam.

I would rather not switch to AutoCad but will if I have to.

I don't know about solidworks, but importing STL and DXF into Cambam is definitely doable. DXF sometime has some challenges, but there are workarounds.

I was trying to export .stl files from Solidworks into PyCam but never had a sniff of success.

It always came up as a binary/ASCII error and an invalid file certificate so decided to try out Cambam but wanted to get some insight first while I still had the 40 tryouts.

STL files are text. You can open one in a text editor and look at it. However, you have an application that told the OS they're something else (a public key security object file), so if you double-click one, you get an error about a certificate. So don't do that. I don't know what is the proper way to open them in PyCam, but if it says anything about a certificate, you're trying to use the default application associated with STL files to open them, rather than PyCam.

Thanks for the info cvoinescu.

When I have some time I'll play with it once again.
