I was just working on some of those features as a proof of concept: git clone https://github.com/alpharesearch/Univer ... Sender.git (unlike Wills build this is more a alpha, for example I don't lock the GUI down (I hope you know what you do)).
I'm hoping that Will can just copy the core parts over to this project to include all the features. That's why I didn't spend much time on the GUI...

Gerbl still has some unused pins, I guess this would work. You should post your idea to the right place: https://github.com/grbl/grbl

Hey Will, just saw the the Version 1.5 has been commited, looks really promissing.
I will test it the next days.

It would be really cool to have some of the features of "alpha" s version included.
Escpecially Buttons for the new grbl 0.8 features would be really nice:

ctrl-x (reset Grbl)
$X (kill alarm lock)
$H (run homing cycle)
~ (cycle start)
! (feed hold)

There seems to be some space for some smal buttons in the Machine Status (or Machine Jogging) panel of Version 1.5
