MachineDesigner: How to design your own ShapeOko

Post by GrblGru » Mon Feb 09, 2015 7:59 pm

I have seen, that many people are planning to enlarge their machine. Maybe my little program 'MachineDesigner' is helpful to find the right size. Simple use the both inputs SX and SY to choose the size of your 'dream-ShapeOko'.

For those people, who are a little bit familiar with a 3D-CAD-program, 'MachineDesigner' gives you the chance to create your own ShapeOko-machine.
The CAD-model, that I use in the program, is very simple. There are only 4 STL-Files.
base.stl = machine base
x.stl = x-axis
y.stl = y-axis
z.stl = z-axis

Some application examples:
- If you like to create your own dust shoe, you can modify z.stl and then move the z-axis up and down to see if there is any intersection.
- If you are thinking about a measuring unit (as I do) add your unit to x.stl, to test the function.
- If you are looking for a way to measure your tool length (as I do), edit base.stl to place a tool touching switch.

Use 'MachineDesigner' to share your ideas with other people.

To see your model under real working conditions, just press the save-button and use the GrblGru-MachineManager to import your CAD-model. Here you can start a NC-Program and see the movements of your modified machine at work.

Have fun with GrblGru

Find in the attachment a new extended 'MachineDesigner' version.
Now it's possible to select also the router, a dust shoe and a measuring unit.
I have created a router in OpenSCAD. The few lines should be a Makita RT 0701.
Ok, the result is not very pretty and I don't know the right dimensions, but I think it demonstrate the principle.
Maybe someone can do better ?

Found CAD-model from Kress 1050 and an Makita dust shoe.
Because the upload is limited to 512 KB, I provide the models here:

Please use the 'Load' function to add it to the program.

I'm still searching for CAD models from router and dust shoes, and will be thankful for every advice.

I have added 2 new dust shoes to the program.

The first is the 'Improved dust collector' designed by FrancisChie (http://www.shapeoko.com/forum/viewtopic.php?f=11&t=5046) to the program. The tube holder must added to the X-axis.
Also found one further dust shoe, which is not closed.

I provide the models here:

After unzipping, please use the 'Load' button from MachineDesigner to add them to the program.

It would be great, if I get further CAD-models from router / spindle, special Dewalt and Makita.
