Software worries

Post by mnolan1948 » Wed Mar 25, 2015 5:49 pm

As most people new to this venture I am struggling with my lack of skill. I need software that will aid me in making what I need. Mostly 2d graphics on my jewelry boxes, some signs and the occassional 3d artwork. Will the provided software that will come with the Shapeoko 3 allow me to do this: ie Easel? I have looked at artworks software will it work with the 3? Any suggestions for me, thanks MN

Easel is by Inventables. It should work w/ an SO3, but you'll need to work that out w/ Inventables.

The Shapeoko 3 won't come w/ software per se, though the next version of Carbide Motion will be the default communication / control program.

Our default / basic workflow is documented here: http://www.shapeoko.com/wiki/index.php/Software

but one can pick any software one wishes starting w/ CAD: http://www.shapeoko.com/wiki/index.php/CAD

I believe that the program which would best suit your engraving needs at the start would be F-Engrave: http://www.shapeoko.com/wiki/index.php/F-Engrave --- once you hit the limits of that, consider Inkscape w/ Gcodetools: http://www.shapeoko.com/wiki/index.php/Inkscape

(there's a section listing 3D options on the CAD page)

If none of the opensource options are appealing you may want to consider a commercial program, list, possibly out-dated and almost certainly incompleat: http://www.shapeoko.com/wiki/index.php/ ... l_Software --- MeshCAM is developed by one of the Carbide3D partners: http://www.grzsoftware.com/ --- if it suits, I believe that it would be a reasonable request that it be expanded to have the same sort of integration w/ the Shapeoko 3 that it has w/ the Nomad 883.

William, very helpful. One reason for my question was for me to begin learning the software. Somewhat disappointed there will be no linked software to the newer shapeoko. You gave me many options, knowing the unit and software needed, what would you or others recommend that I should learn first? I do have Inkscape. I like Artworks.

Not familiar w/ Artworks. If you like Inkscape it’s a great place to start.

MeshCAM will effectively be linked due to the use of the same controller as the Nomad — you’ll just need to set up limit switches and a touch plate / tool probe &c.
