Yes, the student version of SolidWorks is available to veterans for only $20.00. The license is good for one year, but for $20.00 that's not a bad deal.

Here is the link.

From the website:

The SolidWorks Student Edition includes:

SolidWorks 2014-2015
SolidWorks 2015-2016
SolidWorks 2016-2017

SolidWorks® Premium software
eDrawings®
SolidWorks Sustainability
SolidWorks® Simulation Premium
12 month term-of-use license

Note:

We will only be selling SolidWorks 2014-2015 SolidWorks 2015-2016 SolidWorks 2016-2017
The SolidWorks Student Edition cost to qualified US Military Veterans is $20. A copy of your DD214 form is required.

**EDIT:** Oct 2017 - I'm on my third year, and it's still a good deal I think since I am not doing anything commercial with my copy, just stuff around the house and stuff I post to thingiverse with no license restrictions.

Thank you. I guess if they ever stop the discount, it can be removed.

I've been researching this a bit more, and added some potentially useful links to the Commercial Software page on the wiki --- if anyone has any further resources, I'd be glad of them.

Closest things to SolidWorks which are free would be

List of other options at: https://www.shapeoko.com/wiki/index.php/CAD#3D --- you might find OpenVSP suitable as well or some of the options on the commercial page such as Autodesk Fusion 360 or OnShape free enough for your needs.
