Fusion 360 added support for engraving

Post by jalapano » Thu Nov 05, 2015 6:41 pm

On today's Fusion 360 blog post, they mentioned that they've added the ability to engrave - aka v-carve - to the next update! I'm glad this finally came, been wishing for it.

Awesome! I've been using the Pencil toolpath to do engraving, but it's really meant to just clean up edges. It doesn't always engrave regions like you would expect. I hope the new engraving path algorithm works better. Can't wait to try it. Thanks for the heads up.

I would love to start using Fusion 360.

I love the CAD side... very powerful.

I even get the CAM side... with one big BUT. I cannot get my head around the coordinate system. I just want it to set up with the origin on the top of the board, lower left corner of the stock... with Z- down, X+ to the right and Y+ back. And I cannot make it happen. Other tools make this easy... maybe F360 will get there.

Hmmmm, for me that's really easy in Fusion 360. What's the trouble you're hitting, getting that to happen?

You should be able to do it in the first tab of the Setup for the CAM. Have the Work Coordinate System set to:
Orientation: Model orientation
Origin: Stock box point
And then click on the point that you want to have as the origin. I've drawn red arrows pointing to highlight some of the points you can click on.

Cool! That's a great set of features and improvements. I really haven't messed around with engraving, but it could be pretty useful.

Thank you for this amazing reply. But setting the origin point is the easy part. It's getting the coordinate system to line up with the machine that I have problems with. I guess I need to just go back and play with it some more... but to me, it was not intuitive.
