New bit setup help...

Post by mbhwhitney » Mon Nov 12, 2018 7:32 pm

Hey gents,

I picked up some .023 shell cutting bits from ‘Precise Bits’ to cut fret slots in ebony.

I’m about to make my first cut using Aspire and have attached a screenshot of the bit settings I have so far taken from their website for the .023 endmill (screenshot also attached). I've also attached the settings I've put in Aspire (so far).

Are you able to confirm if these settings look like a good place to start? Also, I’m not sure what to put for ‘stepover’ and the ‘%’ fields under ‘cutting parameters’ and also don’t know what speed to set my Makita router to approximate 24000 RPM.

I received some advice from another guitar maker who said that the acceleration rates needed to be changed to about half of the standard settings and that they need to be changed in the software while leaving the router at the highest rpm’s possible.I have no idea how to do this.

Thanks in advance!

Acceleration is a Grbl setting: https://docs.carbide3d.com/software-faq ... -settings/

$120=400.000 (x accel, mm/sec^2)
$121=400.000 (y accel, mm/sec^2)
$122=400.000 (z accel, mm/sec^2)

I'd suggest using the Precise Bits technique: https://www.precisebits.com/tutorials/c ... speeds.htm to verify feeds and speeds (but careful, carbide is brittle and will break)

Hey Will - thanks for your reply. I didn't receive an email hence my delay in responding sooner.

I have this link from precise bits: https://www.precisebits.com/materials/i ... #FeedSpeed

However, I'm still unclear on how to "...set the acceleration rates to half" based on your GRBL values mentioned. Does this sound like the right for the .023" shell cutting bit (in ebony) given the info in the link above?

Thanks,
M.

To halve the acceleration rates, change them in Grbl configuration:

https://docs.carbide3d.com/software-faq ... -settings/

Code: Select all

$120=400.000 (x accel, mm/sec^2)
$121=400.000 (y accel, mm/sec^2)
$122=400.000 (z accel, mm/sec^2)
Change those to 200.
