Shapeoko 3 3D carving accuracy & quality of detail?

Post by Tactile » Sun Feb 09, 2020 10:20 pm

Looking to purchase a Shapeoko 3, smallest size, but have a question about the achievable level of detail for 3D carving. I produce work that is intended to be touched, essentially low-relief sculpture with a maximum relief height of approximately 2mm. The attached image shows a 3x3inch sample of the 3D relief.

The smooth background must be completely smooth and flat to the touch. The relief itself must also be 100% accurate and smooth with no machining marks visible or detectable via touch. Material will be High Density Polyurethane model board.

Can any Shapeoko 3 owners with 3D carving experience let me know if this is the right machine? I see the Nomad has higher accuracy but is too small for my work, it got me wondering if the Shapeoko 3 is accurate enough. Thanks in advance for any help!

That would depend on your ability to create toolpaths and how well the endmills and design would match.

I'd suspect that machining times would be fairly long.

What tool is used to draw up the designs?
Shapeoko 3XL #0006 w/ Carbide Compact Router w/0.125″ and ¼″ Carbide 3D precision collets
Nomad 883 Pro #596 (bamboo)
