Other Proxxon IB/E users? And an example job

Post by tioJim » Fri Jan 11, 2013 10:50 am

Hello

So I've graduated from the Help! section as I have reliable X, Y, Z and have Sharpie'd hello world.

For now I'm going to use my Proxxon IB/E as a spindle so would like to say hello to others using the IB/E and share notes etc.

So I want to run my first proper job and I was hoping somebody had a proven example - in other words a material type, an end mill recommendation, GRBL settings (feed rate especially) and some Gcode. My thinking is if I can reliably replicate a job that somebody else has verified if you will then that's a good starting point from which to explore.

I did try the ShapeOko coaster on some picture board but it went a bit crazy. I suspect my end mill was unsuitable so that'd be a good place to start.

Ultimately if I could be engraving and cutting 3mm acrylic sheet sometime soon that'd be fantastic. Presumably that's a realistic expectation with my setup (stock ShapeOko) and aforementioned Proxxon.

I have cut 3mm acrylic sheets with all of these:

http://www.ebay.com/itm/1-16-0625-2-FLU ... 589a340b59
http://www.ebay.com/itm/10-1-00mm-0394- ... 2314a6e8fe

The 1/8" endmills are most forgiving, as in I have yet to find a setting that doesn't work. Somewhere in the 900mm/min feed rate and 1-2mm per pass range should work fine.

Awesome. Are you using a Proxxon? If not what are you using so I can compare specs.

I was using a dremel XPR 400, the runout made it very difficult to use the 1mm bits and I broke about 5 bits trying to get the settings right.

That tool has since started to die on me so I upgraded to the Dewalt dw660.

My shapeoko has the dual-y motor modification, I'm not sure how important that mod is for acrylic.

How's the runout on the Dewalt compared to the dremel?

I just made some rough measurements, my dremel had a runout of .0075" while the dewalt had a runout of .001"
