Does Inventables Nema 23 upgrade to Shapeoko 2 work ok?

Post by kristenanne77 » Sat Feb 29, 2020 3:01 pm

I am dusting off the old shapeoko 2 after 2 years of non use. I miss my cute little machine. In the past I have done a few mods to it but hesitated about a stepper motor upgrade from Nema 17 to Nema 23. I wasn't sure if the power supply could handle the extra power the controllers require.

Question 1:
I noticed an inventables upgrade kit for the x and y axis to Nema 23 motors.
Anyone have experience with this mod? Did it work without needing a larger power supply?
Is it an easy "plug and play" replacement or does it require disassembly of some of the machine?

Question 2:
No mention to a z axis upgrade to nema 23 mentioned. Is that ok?

Question 3:
Would I need stronger belts to accommodate the larger steppers?

Bonus Question:
Is there a lubricant available for the belts? I was thinking that after a few years of inactivity, the belts might snap from drying up.
Is there a danger in lubricating the rubber? Will it affect the machines accuracy?

Thanks
Kristen

1 - It's my understanding the power supply provides sufficient voltage to run the NEMA23 motors --- they're more efficient due to the larger diameter which is the big advantage, so should work well.

2 - yes, the threaded rod on the Z-axis has much better mechanical advantage, and the Z-axis has to move much less mass, so a larger motor isn't as helpful

3 - no, but 9mm belts are a _huge_ improvement and the best bang-for the buck upgrade on the machine --- I'd recommend them before the motors (if you can source pulleys w/ 5mm bores).

You can use any sort of belt dressing for rubber (neoprene), but neoprene is quite stable if kept out of UV sunlight.

I did this upgrade recently, and although I've only made a few projects with it, I didn't need a new controller. I did find I was skipping steps at times, and had to increase the voltage a bit. I didn't change the z-axis nemo 17, and so far haven't seen a need to do so. I also upgraded to 9mm belts (and 1000m x 1000m).

Yesterday I found this thread, and will likely upgrade my controller soon:

Thanks. How did you increase the voltage? It has been years since I first assembled the Shapeoko 2, but I seem to remember some adjustments on the board to control the current, but not the voltage.

Does the controller board upgrade you mention have provisions for homing and limit switches (homing and x and y limit switches).
The last mod I did about 2 -3 years ago )was this one not sure if it is still available)
All I could remember was it was a real pain getting and connecting the wiring on the arduino! Took a while!
But when I got it working, it worked great.
Then I got a new router and spindle mount and had to readjust where to put the magnets for the z axis switch . Thats when i got distracted on other projects for a few years!!!

I wouldn't mind a nice board with enough power for the nema 23's AND a simple wiring hookup for the homing and limit switches.
Does this board have such connections?

thanks

I misspoke when I said I increased the voltage; I just used the info on these pages:
https://wiki.shapeoko.com/index.php/Tuning
https://github.com/synthetos/grblShield ... or-current

I haven't actually made the controller boards mentioned in that link, so my info is not first-hand. But I do believe they allow for homing and limit switches (don't see why they wouldn't).
