CoVID-19 Pandemic - Can we help ?

Post by hpcnp » Mon Mar 30, 2020 8:40 pm

Dear CNC-enabled friends -

I was just on a discussion for work when the topic of the Mercedes F1 team converting their custom machine shop to creating and pumping out ventilators (https://www.bbc.com/news/health-52087002) to help the local healthcare network keep up with the exponential rise in demand. I'm sure some of you in the US are familiar with the US president ordering GM to switch production to solve the same problem. No matter your opinion of that president or his order, my hope is that you agree with me that doing something that could help save a life, or many lives in your local area is a good thing.

By posting this here, my hope is to generate a discussion and maybe some grassroots organization of a very special community. We who own Shapeoko's and possibly (well... let's be honest, almost surely) have other tooling not available to the common person are uniquely and powerfully positioned to make a difference. This is not meant to be a guilt trip post - but if you, like me, want to be of service in a way that could preserve human life, please reply to this thread - even if you don't have ideas to share.

There are many people who will be struggling for life's basics of food clothing and shelter given employment situations. If that is your situation, I'm not asking you for anything - please take care of yourself and your family. For now, I'm gratefully employed and housed and I want to help my community.

So, the question on my mind, is what and how. As in, what do we build, and how do we get it/them into the right hands?

Maybe additive manufacturing is better suited to this need & problem - thoughts ? I haven't taken a look at the various components that make a ventilator, but I will do that now and post updates to this thread.

No doubt some of you have started hearing about this happening around the world. (see the links below for just a few examples) Crowd sourcing to solve this problem is already underway. Let's see if we can represent our little community and make a difference.

Thanks for your support, ideas, and thoughts.
Chris
