Advice about buildup of Shapeoko 2

Post by Stevend » Sat Apr 26, 2014 5:39 am

I am expanding my Shapeoko 2 to be 1800mm x 1200mm to be able to fit a standard exterior door blank. What if anything can I do to stiffen up the gantry to minimize any deflection from the weight of a DW660?

The SO2 adds the Dual MakerSlide upgrade, but doesn't fasten the rail --- people have run a DW660 on an un-upgraded SO1, so you're good, except for the added span of rail. Things to do:

* fasten the two lengths of rail together --- bolt, screw, epoxy or use the Makerslide joining clips --- probably epoxy isn't good for this length and the joining clips would be difficult to put in place for this length of run
* sister in lengths of steel along the top or bottom[http://www.shapeoko.com/forum/viewtopic ... =30#p18821]
* fashion some sort of plates to join the pieces of Makerslide together

I find this to be the easiest method, and it seems solid.

Materials:
  • M3 T-slot insertion nuts (Misumi HNKK5-3 or equivalent);
  • M3 x 20mm hex socket cap screws;
  • M3 washers
You need two of each for each 10-15 cm of MakerSlide. Other types of screw can be used if their head fits in the slot. The washers prevent the 20 mm screws from bottoming out (they have exactly 20 mm of room).

Lay your MakerSlide Vs up, and drill in the bottom of the slot, through the core, using a 3.0 to 3.3 mm drill, every 10-15 cm. The holes don't need to be precisely positioned, just reasonably vertical (the groove at the bottom the slot will help keep the drill centered in the slot). Do both rails. Put a washer on each screw, and the screw through the hole, from the face with the Vs. Thread the insertion nuts on the screws (the side with the protrusion away from the MakerSlide) a turn or two. Grab both pieces of MakerSlide, and slide the insertion nuts of one into the slot on the back of the other. Align them accurately, and tighten the screws firmly. Done!

The assembly is marginally more solid if mounted so that the front rail has its slot at the bottom.

I wanted to avoid having to modify my parts as much as possible and went for the misumi extrusion/openrail route. HFS5-4060-1000 for my X and for the Y makerslide 1000mm with midspan supports. In my build log I go into more detail.

Thanks groguard,

I have one more stick of makerslide coming and then I will post pics of what I have come up with.
