Using Android tablet to control Shapeoko 2

Post by Hemmel » Tue Sep 30, 2014 3:46 pm

Hello !

First off, I want to apologize if this has been covered already, but I searched through the forum and haven't found any recent updates (latest are from 2012) on this functionality.

I bought a Shapeoko 2 full kit. I'm still in the process of assembling it. I would like to put it on my workbench but I learned that USB cables have a limit of 5 meters (about 16.5 feet) and I can't put any computers that close to the workbench. So I thought maybe I could use my Samsung Galaxy Note tablet. I found some adapters that give the tablet a USB port, but I can't find any information about software (maybe one about TinyG ??).

Basically I would like to know if anyone has this setup : the Shapeoko 2 plugged into a Samsung tablet ? If so, how to proceed on setting this up ?

Thanks !

Search Google Play Store for TinyG Console. I've not got it working myself.

Interesting !

However this video doesn't seem to show the full console's capabilities. On Google Play's site for the app there are pics that show that you can also open a G-Code file to send it to the Shapeoko.

I will try it out and post my results here. Who knows, maybe I'll make a video myself. :D

Thank you !

Ugh, Windows....
I'd rather try to use Android or then again buy a mini-PC and install a Linux distro on it.

I use GCodePrinter for both my 3d printer and shapeoko

Auzze,
How do you connect your Shapeoko to Android ?
Just curious.

I have been testing a RAMPS board on a experimental 5 axis Shapeoko, but more on that later, it's still not ready for showing off...

Well I bought this USB adapter for a Samsung tablet on eBay.
I hope this will be enough to use my tablet as the Shapeoko 2's controller.

I should get it at the end of the month.

Well, I got the USB adapter and it works great. I plugged in my webcam and it was instantly recognized so the USB host post was up and running from the start.

I tried the "TinyG CNC Console" app, but since my Shapeoko has a gShield board and not a TinyG board, it won't work.

Auzze's suggestion of GCodePrinter seemed to be a better solution and I found a free version, which I installed.
Unfortunately, the minimal baud rate for connection is 19200. I couldn't find a setting to put it at 9600. So the connection failed.

Auzze, can you tell me if in the full version of the app, there is a baud rate setting for 9600 ?
Thanks !
