They've stated in the past that the angles for it make it unsuitable for them to support.
Ellaire Corporation does do a high quality replacement (as noted on the wiki: http://www.shapeoko.com/wiki/index.php/Spindle_Options ): http://www.elairecorp.com/makitaroutercollets.html which is available in a variety of sizes.

Shapeoko 3XL #0006 w/ Carbide Compact Router w/0.125″ and ¼″ Carbide 3D precision collets
Re: 1/4 shank drill chuck and adapter
While I wait for the Elaire collet I ended up using the electrical tape again, 1 layer is enough around the 6mm end mill shank.
This time I remembered to tighten the collet nut tight with the wrench (when the tape melted I had only hand tightened it ... <doh>)
It's worked well so far (just did 1 hour wood part).
Thanks all!

I mostly didn't reply back to this as we have been quite busy. And I tend to try not to comment on other manufacturers products. Thanks for the kind words though. If anyone needs help or info I can provide feel free to contact me.edwardrford wrote:You might want to check with PreciseBits about your model. They specialize in this sort of thing (if I'm understanding your question correctly!).
I can vouch for them to provide high quality products and great service. Plus, I think they're on this forum as well (not advertising, but as members) - They have appeared to be generally helpful and non-intrusive, which probably explains why they didn't answer this thread directly. Or maybe they dont' make their kit for the Makita RT0701C?

It's nice to see you!
I checked out their collet page http://www.precisebits.com/gateways/ColletsNutsHome.htm
They don't have Makita on their list. I'll ask if they carry it somehow.
Thanks! Caesar.
We do not make a collet for the Makita as the length of the collet and taper angle make it a difficult proposition with the accuracy grades we bin to. Additionally there is much less room for error on the internal taper. We have had huge issues with that in the past (Bosch Colt).
Please don't run a tool with electrical tape on the shank. This is quite dangerous. I have had tools break during testing where pieces of carbide have gone flying. Wouldn't want to be in front of it. If that tape lets loose it would be even worse as it would be unbalanced and higher mass. Admittedly the odds of this happening are quite low but it's not worth the risk. Additionally, you are almost certainly adding a lot of runout to the system this way. That will effect both the cut quality and life of the tooling.Caesar S wrote:While I wait for the Elaire collet I ended up using the electrical tape again, 1 layer is enough around the 6mm end mill shank.

Hi,
Thank you for advising against using tape.
It was foolish, I was waiting for the proper collet to arrive.
Caesar.
