1/4 shank drill chuck and adapter

It's really difficult working with collets with 1/4" shank diameter meant for router bits.

Is there such a thing as a drill chuck with a 1/4" round shank? It would be so much easier to use most diameters of end mill bits.

I've experimented with 6mm end mill bits and made it fit with a layer of electric tape around the 6mm shank. The electrical tape melted after 2 minutes though and the end mill bit came lose

I tried my hex drill bits and they don't fit in the 1/4" collet

Thanks, Caesar.

What type of Collet are you using?

ER11(such as those used in the Quiet Cut), ER13 and other 'ER' collets comes in all sizes...
A 13-piece set of Metric ER11 collets with diameters from 1 to 7mm in 0.5mm increments isn't all that expensive, really.

I'm not sure what you are looking for, but there are a plethora of endmills available in 1/4" shank diameter. I have single flutes, doubles flutes, 4-fluted, ball nose, square, 30 degree, 60 degree, 90 degree endmills and a half dozen different diameters (from 1/16" to 3/8"). On top of that, I picked up a 1/4" --> 1/8" adapter and I have another range of endmills that work flawlessly.

There are plenty of threads on here that point to good sources for enmills (drillman1 on eBay is a common one). If you have a common size you use that is not 1/4", look around for an adapter or for a custom collet that will fit your spindle. There are tons of options out there.

With regards to the drillchuck, that's a lot of mass to put on the end-- and at 1.5HP and 30,000 RPM I feel more confident with something I torqued down with a wrench. On top of that, I'm not aware of any endmills with hex shanks that are appropriate for the milling I do.

These are exactly what I'm looking for!

Where did you purchase them from?

Thanks, Caesar.

All of them off of eBay, and probably a bit over half of them from drillman1. He doesn't sell them as a kit (although I think there are some 1/8" ones bundled together), so I've just amassed them over the last year or so as the need arose. I think his shipping is flat rate, so you'll save money by buying more than one at a time if he has what you need.

The link below is a search of "1/4" in his eBay store.

I'm using a 1/4 inch router. Makita RT0701C specifically. The ER11 collets work only with the Quiet Spindle. The Makita provides higher RPM (30,000) and torque for smoother cuts and/or faster feed rates (where the material allows it).

Thanks!

Check, I believe there are a couple of companies out there that make custom or precision collets for your router. The stock collet on my DW611 performs well enough I haven't ordered one, but I know some people on this forum noted a marked improvement in runout with an aftermarket collet.

Thanks! I found this custom collet maker (from WillAdams post) http://www.elairecorp.com/makitaroutercollets.html. They carry various collet sizes online specific to Makita RT0701C $24.50 each.

I purchased the 1/8th and 6mm collets. There area also 8mm collets. Sets of SAE and metric collets as well.

You might want to check with PreciseBits about your model. They specialize in this sort of thing (if I'm understanding your question correctly!).

I can vouch for them to provide high quality products and great service. Plus, I think they're on this forum as well (not advertising, but as members) - They have appeared to be generally helpful and non-intrusive, which probably explains why they didn't answer this thread directly. Or maybe they dont' make their kit for the Makita RT0701C?

Hi Edward,

It's nice to see you!

I checked out their collet page http://www.precisebits.com/gateways/ColletsNutsHome.htm

They don't have Makita on their list. I'll ask if they carry it somehow.

Thanks! Caesar.
