First Job..Question

Post by bharbour » Sun Oct 26, 2014 11:57 pm

I finally did my first job today...a Fleur de Lis pattern on some scrap pine. I used the settings from the "First Job" in the instructions. I noticed that the bit (bit that came with the full kit) wanted to bog down and left fibers around the edged of the cut. I had to slow the feed rate down to 5 inches per minute. Even then the spindle was loaded up a little. I'm not sure what gives. Before I could figure it out, it bogged down so bad that the bit was pulled out of the spindle. The spindle is tough...didn't seem to hurt it.

Does 5 inches per minute sound too slow? Depth drop at each pass was 0.03125". I'll load some video tomorrow.

Tnx,

Make sure that bit is in tight as it can. I had some issues with the bit pulling out of the dremel tool in the beginning. You'll probably also want to verify that the dremel is perpendicular to the cutting board and isn't at an angle.

The settings from the ``First Job'' page are intended for cork, as noted there.

For pine, I'm afraid we don't have values for a stock SO2: http://www.shapeoko.com/wiki/index.php/Materials#Pine

You should be able to reverse engineer an initial set from the relative Janka hardness scale settings though, or better still, use the technique here: http://www.precisebits.com/tutorials/ca ... speeds.htm to work up a set of feed-speeds and post it.

(this reminds me, did we copy in all the values from Easel into the wiki?)

Will, I'm not good at this updating the wiki stuff. Although I'm sure it was conservative I milled pine at the same settings as MDF.
