How to increase Shapeoko2 speed (movement speed)

Post by mano » Mon Mar 02, 2015 3:53 pm

Good afternoon guys,

I'm wasting to much time looking at the machine while it moves from a point to another when it is not cutting...Do you know how I can change that? I know how to increase the catting spped (aka feedrate) but not the general speed of the machine when it's not cutting...The software i'm it's using Autocad > Meshcam > Universal Gcode sender.
Thank you in advance.

  • What controller are you using? Tinyg, GRBLshield, Something else?
  • What firmware version for the above controller?

If you're using GRBL, the traverse (aka seek, aka rapid) speed is controlled by GRBL settings, not by the CAM program. Acceleration can also make a huge difference, so it's worth tuning too.

Check out https://github.com/grbl/grbl/wiki/Configuring-Grbl-v0.9 -- the relevant parameters are $110..112 and $120..122. (If you have GRBL 0.8, I strongly suggest you upgrade to 0.9, unless you use Easel. 0.9 can move significantly faster than 0.8.)

Thank you very much for your quick answers.
I understood what you told me but I can't find or edit $120, $121 or $122.... Those values don't even show up on my Gcode Universal Sender (version 1.0.7) and nothing happens if i press $x. I've changed already $4, $5 and $8 and I'll see what happens. I'll attach a picture of what my Gcode Sender $$ menu.

It looks like you have GRBL 0.8something on your Arduino.

It's HIGHLY recommended to upgrade to 0.9 unless you use Easel.

I am also using GRBL 0.8. I haven't upgraded yet because I finally got it dialed in. Will have to start over if I upgrade? Sorry to hijack but I have the same speed question and it looks like you got the answer I needed. Thank you for your time.

Write down your settings, because the upgrade will delete them.
Then it's a minute or two to load them back(they've changes numbers, though. Read the Wiki for details).

so easy that even I could do it...
