Carbide Motion software questions

Post by DaveHinz » Thu Mar 12, 2015 3:18 pm

So, we're getting Carbide Motion to control our S3s. That's great, but I can't find a way to try it without it being attached to a machine. I googled around but am not finding any guides or tutorials on the app.

Does anyone have a starting point? I'd like to play with the app and get some screen time with it, while I'm waiting for my machine.

That would be nice, but there's a narrow window for needing it.

If you want to play around w/ a virtual machine, my suggestion would be: http://www.shapeoko.com/wiki/index.php/ ... Simulation --- the nifty Grblguru (see http://www.shapeoko.com/forum/viewtopic.php?f=6&t=4710 ) --- looking forward to seeing that updated to have the Shapeoko 3 design as an option once we have the design files.

@DaveHinz : I've used CarbideMotion v1 on their Nomad 883.. It's pretty awesome, but at the time, it was written to support only the Nomad. I think they change the Grbl welcome string and check it to make sure it's compatible. They do a lot of things like tool length offset probing and tool management internally, since the Nomad has a tool probe. I don't know how they updated CarbideMotion v2, but if it works like v1, it should be great. They simplify the whole process down to something that is about as turn-key as you can get without losing functionality. Meaning that it's well organized, and the workflow is straightforward and makes sense.

What file formats can it work from, do you know?

CarbideMotion v1 was only a g-code sender and machine interface, similar to UGS, GrblPanel, or Chilipeppr. It takes standard g-code program text files. I don't think they added anything major to v2. More likely they improved the interface, added SO3 support, and ironed out the kinks.

Ah, OK. So I still need a good CAD program to start from then, this is the transport not the design part.

Hooray; I'm less ignorant already!

Does the Carbide/Motion with GRBL support adding a tool probe to the SO3?
