That's my preference as well.

Worst case is people will have to buy a single 2-axis expansion kit, split it, and split the expenses --- I hope that that won't be the case though, and that there will be 3 SKUs to start:

- two axis 4' x 4' working area expansion kit
- 16" x 4' X-axis expansion kit (half the above)
- 4' Y-axis x 16" expansion kit (the balance)

I know that if I wind up w/ a 4' x 4' kit, I simply don't have room for that size machine (plus I need to keep my machine man portable so I can cut Ipe on the back deck), and would have to sell off (or store) half of it.

I hope that later there will be an 8' working area Y-axis expansion kit as well (maybe when I retire and relocate I can manage to get a workshop which would accommodate such a machine).

Personally all I want is a pair of extrusions that are 4 - 6 feet long. I have plans in mind on how I want to expand my machine.

I'm hoping that they will have a variety of options and one is just longer extrusions.

Same here. I can not take 5' x 5' rails but I can take a couple of 4' rails and a 3' x axis rail. I have a 4' by 40" torsion box. It was built thinking that they will have a 1000x1000 expansion. Likely that I have to build another one. Also with the shipping charge I might have to drive down to the shop to pick it up.

personal preference : i also only have space to extend on only one axis... therefore if 4'x4' is the only option, i can't buy a SO3...

i think 3 types : 16"x16", 16"x4', and 4'x4 would cover most of the needs...

Add 4'x8' and I agree!! Just want the people (and maybe it's only me) that have no space concerns & have use for the large machine to have a voice.

Yeah, it was interesting the distribution of what people wanted —4'x8' was the second most popular choice: http://www.shapeoko.com/forum/viewtopic.php?f=11&t=5652
