Another Dial Indicator Bracket
Another Dial Indicator Bracket
Seemed like a good spot for a dial indicator bracket. So far so good.

Re: Another Dial Indicator Bracket
It would be nice if we could all standardize on a location and sizes/threads for these holes --- maybe then we could work up some synergy w/ mounting brackets &c.

Re: Another Dial Indicator Bracket
Attached is some CAD data if anyone is interested (step and stl). I actually used a 3D printed version for a bit. It works just as well but cutting one out in 1/2" thick aluminum on the Shapeoko is sexier looking. Matches the mount anyway. Prototyped one out of wood too. Wooden one will work but you have to be mindful of the grain direction. The holes are for 1/4"-20 fasteners. Obviously, the center hole is the only one that needs to be tapped.

Re: Another Dial Indicator Bracket
Good idea, nice execution. Has a stock look to it. I might go for a brass- or plastic-tipped set screw to avoid marring the indicator shaft.

Re: Another Dial Indicator Bracket
Thanks for the files. I was thinking about CADing one up to 3D print. Now I don't have to.

Re: Another Dial Indicator Bracket
Silly question, do mill with that on? Or remove it?

Re: Another Dial Indicator Bracket
You should be able to leave the bracket on while you mill. If you put it on the front like the photo shows.sraney wrote:Silly question, do mill with that on? Or remove it?
I would not leave the indicator attached though.
Re: Another Dial Indicator Bracket
You could make a swivel version, so it always stays on the machine. Ball detent maybe. Repeatable enough in Z.

No, I do not mill with the dial indicator installed.
