Shapeoko 3 tolerance

Post by designxtek » Tue Oct 20, 2015 3:38 am

Does anyone know the tolerance of the shapeoko 3?

I had some pockets that are suppose to be 10.15mm width and my shapeoko is doing 10mm pockets.
My 3D printer is getting within 10.05mm.

Seems like my S3 is +/-0.15mm

That sounds pretty close to the 0.005 inch expected accuracy. You might get it better through careful calibration and squaring.

I believe upgrading belt width helps on this.

The other thing to try is a finishing pass w/ roughening clearance suitable to leave an optimal size chip. Experimenting w/ path direction may help w/ backlash here.

What sort of results did you get when calibrating using what method?

I'm waiting for my Nomad 883. I'm mainly going to use the shapeoko for roughing and Nomad for finishing. Just curious of the tolerance on my S3. :D

I would be interested to know more about your experience with fine tuning your Shapeoko 3, if you go that route; for example, if you were to upgrade your belts to GT3's. Anyhow, a Shapeoko 3 and Nomad 883 combo will surely get you places.

Is the Nomad that much better?

It has ball screw rods or something, and promises a repeatability of 0.001" (0.0254mm )
It also has a tool-length probe to automatically measure the length of the toool(Z-axis homing).

I have a bit of an issue with that repeatability, though, as that's the same as the listed run-out on their spindle.
That would mean that the rods are almost perfect, that the spindle mount is rock solid, there's no measurable deflection anywhere...
I'm giving them the benefit of the doubt and assuming that it's better than 0.004" but 0.001" I won't believe before I see it with my own eyes.

Or?
The website is all about the Nomad 883 Pro?
Wasn't it just 'Nomad 883' before?
Weird guy...

Yes, the Nomad is to be upgraded to a “Pro” model, due to a mis-order of too-large parts.

The Pro version takes advantage of said parts, and has some modifications to make assembly easier, and to reduce parts count, taking advantage of 5-axis machining.

Thread on it on their forums.

I'll have to check that out. Thanks for the info.
