Pressure plates?

Post by aarvidsson » Tue Jan 05, 2016 10:01 am

Has anyone tried a pressure plate (like this http://www.aliexpress.com/item/Automati ... 94992.html or this http://www.widgetworksunlimited.com/category_s/70.htm) for cutting thin sheets? Ideally I'd like to use a 3mm upcut bit and do about 1,5mm depth of cut, provided that the "#¤! sheet actually stays flat and don't go sailing through the room (as it does without something like the above). I'm unwilling to shell out the money until I know if it actually works or not :S

I think what you are really looking for is a vacuum hold down plate: http://www.microsystemsgeorgia.com/smar ... sitory.htm

I've been considering one of those, but I'm afraid that the noise will make it impossible for me to use it in my apartment. Hence my question about the pressure foot.

Just use a Gast vacuum pump, search rcgroups for a used one, they pop up occasionally. Super quiet, I ran one in my shop for years. Besides, milling thin sheets, especially in aluminum, is very loud anyway, louder than a shop-vac which makes the same amount of noise as a regular vacuum cleaner. Certainly not something to do between 10pm and 6am anyway.
