Where to buy Nema 23's stepper motors? (Canada)

Post by jininjin » Thu Feb 04, 2016 1:50 pm

I have only found a couple on ebay that match what I am looking for. Is there any places that I should look. Preferably in Canada but If I need to I will buy outside.

Motor Specs:
Nema 23
3.2v
2.8a
1.8 step angle
10.1 kg-cm(140 in-oz) to 18.9 kg-cm (262 in-oz) Holding Torque

Side question: Does it matter if I have higher torque on the X axis compared to the rest of the machine?

Edit: 1.8 step angle not 2.8

We list some Canadian suppliers at: http://www.shapeoko.com/wiki/index.php/Vendors

and some specific order links (mostly for NEMA17 though) at: http://www.shapeoko.com/wiki/index.php/Parts#Motors

Stepper Motor selection is discussed to some degree at: http://www.shapeoko.com/wiki/index.php/Stepper_Motors

The important thing is the Y-axes must match --- the X-axis, working alone, would likely benefit from more torque.

I just purchased something similar from http://us.stepperonline.com/. Not sure if that'll meet your needs or not.
No longer have a Shapeoko, but use a machine of my own design...

2.8° Stepper? That would be 360° / 2.8° = 128.5714285714286 steps per revolution. Do you mean 1.8°?

In Canada:
Try Phidgets: http://www.phidgets.com/products.php?category=23
or
RobotShop: http://www.robotshop.com/en/stepper-motors.html

Oops Sorry that was a typo, I did mean 1.8

That's Great news, I will probably get a higher torque stepper motor then.
Although I just read that Wiki Linkhttp://www.shapeoko.com/wiki/index.php/Parts#Motors. It says up to a maximum of ~125 oz./in? Is this right or is it just recommended? I currenlty have 140oz/in and might spring for the 262oz-in for the X axis.
I am reading more... lots to understand about motors..

125 oz. in. is what's suggested in terms of price / performance / weight, in light of the weight of the machine, and the cuts it can take people have used more powerful, most notably I.C., but c.f.,

http://www.shapeoko.com/wiki/index.php/ ... _23_motors

Still not certain where the point of diminishing returns for the SO3 is.

More info! Thanks. Ok now I'm thinking to stick with 140 oz/in. It appears there is a tradeoff of weight, torque and the machines capabilities.

I found this great explenation from Inventables http://blog.inventables.com/p/stepper-motors.html
