bCNC problems sending code

Post by Auarhau » Tue Mar 15, 2016 8:40 pm

I'm having a strange problem with bCNC. It operates the machine just fine. I can jog around, set zero and home etc. when I load a gcode file I can see the tool paths and I can run the "scan" macro fine. But when I try to send the code, it will shut down the program completely and even log off my user from Ubuntu. See my shaky camera proof below 8-)

I followed the install instructions from the bCNC wiki page at github.

Any ideas?

I can't see any log file produced by bCNC. But I included the system log file if that was what you ment. The bCNC crash should be at the very end of that log if there is anything there. I haven't looked on the log myself yet, I need to get some sleep now:) I'll look more into it tomorrow, but I appreciate it if anyone more experienced also has a look :)

Edit: Looks like my log file got word wrapped/ compressed or something. But it looks as it should in Nodepad++

Unix vice PC line endings.

Not seeing anything helpful --- file a bug report @ github?

Mar 15 22:15:21 cnc-ThinkCentre-A57 gnome-session[1246]: Gdk-WARNING: gnome-session: Fatal IO error 11 (Resource temporarily unavailable) on X server :0.#012

Does not help you much, but seems X died?
Could there be more errors in /var/log/Xorg.* from the same timeframe?

Looks like this videobug: http://askubuntu.com/questions/152476/u ... o-error-11

I installed a new graphics card and tried both the open source and the proprietary drivers. And I installed Linux Mint and tested with that too (which is basically ubuntu, so probably no different..). Nothing helped.

Sometimes the error causes my computer to crash and freeze completely and I have to do a hard restard. But most of the time the screen goes blank, the machine moves a few more moves and stops and the computer logs out and nothing is running when I log in again. The error is 100% repeatable when I hit the play button, and there is no error what so ever when I do everything else (jog, home etc).

Sadly it seems this could still be many other things than a bCNC problem.
You probably have to narrow it down more.

- Have you tried other gcode senders?
- Do you have a difference PC you could use just for testing, like a laptop?
- It could be static electricity as I have had that problem myself, but not with the same sympthoms..
- If you try to run the bCNC and the gcodes without powering your steppers, will the PC crash then too?

Excellent points. Added a link to that from the top of the comm/control page --- okay to copy the text there?

Yes I have tried several g-code senders. They all work. But none of them has all the functionality I am looking for (chilipeppr and bCNC are the two most promising, but I have some different issues with both).
I've run Universal g code sender for several years with the same PC setup.

I don't think static electricity has anything to do with this, it's too specific.

I will try a different PC next, and also with the steppers powered down.

A modern, stable machine controll / g-code sender is the last part of my pipeline that I need to sort out. Fusion 360 solved all the other software workflow issues. So I hope I can get my PC and bCNC to cooperate. :)
