Full 16"x16" Wateboard Ideas for Shapeoko 3

Post by k5beason » Mon Apr 11, 2016 4:31 pm

I'm going to be milling some 16"x16" 1/8" Aluminum Sheets so I need to extend the wasteboard to get the full travel.

I've installed the aluminum base and I was thinking of adding an HDPE wasteboard over the top of it, cutting a slot for the steel crossmember to pass through. and adding some stock to support it upfront.

Maybe something like this http://www.usplastic.com/catalog/item.a ... &catid=705 a HDPE cutting board and than tramming it for level?

Any suggestions or anyone else do anything to get the full 16" x 16" cutting area?

Sounds reasonable to me. I considered doing something along those lines when I added an HDPE wasteboard, but didn't since my machine overhangs the front of the table it's on, and I want to be able to do joinery by cutting boards held at 90 degrees to the bed.

I made mine from 3/4" MDF, replacing the original waste board, and made the front section removable so I did not lose the ability to machine long parts. I use a system of dowels and threaded inserts with fences and wedges to hold most of my work pieces. It works great for repeatability and production.

I also designed my extended wasteboard to replace the wasteboard without having to disassemble the machine or impact the adjustment of square. It's been working great.

You could also make a vacuum table to bridge over the front frame for your aluminum sheets.

I had found this at one of the local "building" supply places https://www.menards.com/main/building-m ... 3429944148 1/4" HDPE sheet comes in 4'x8' sheets for about $60. Thought about doing 2 layers with the second layer being slotted. They will special order 3/8" sheets for about $20 more. Down side is HDPE doesn't glue well so I was thinking 1/8" aluminum rivets to hold the layers in place. That way if I hit it with a cutter I have a chance at not killing the bit (depending on how bad I screw up). I was looking at HDPE because it's cheaper than Aluminum and should still hold up to most cutting fluids (so I can cut some aluminum and not have the MDF "puff up" when I get WD-40 or the like on it. I'm upgrading my Shapeoko (2) to 1M x 1M so the USP cutting boards get to be just about as expensive as Aluminum plate. So I'll be watching this thread to see what comes up.

I'd go for a 3/8" board as a base w/ T-nuts, then use nylon bolts to hold a 1/4" spoilboard in place on top of it, replacing that at need.

The steel cross frame creates a lip just under 1/4". I think 3/8" would be perfect and allow for a slot to be cut and slip over the steel frame.

Wouldn't need a 4x8 sheet tho. The cutting board option is the best value but alittle thick for my application but can be trammed down as needed

Even cheaper on Amazon http://www.amazon.com/Winco-Cutting-Boa ... ting+board

Should be plenty long enough to cut off the rounded edges.

I order my hdpe from amazon, eplastics and i plastic supply, and i will say amazon has always been great. I typically order vycom playboard depending on the color and style i need.
