flat ground aluminum plate

Post by D@DENNIS.COM » Sun Jun 05, 2016 7:53 pm

Have read through the posts on this topic and am asking if someone who has replaced the mfd with aluminum might have the dimensions for a one piece replacement of the mfd and some places to source the plate.

I want to set up the holding fixturing options myself otherwise I would onsider the C3 option.

Respecfully

https://www.midweststeelsupply.com/store/looks like a good place to purchase the plate reasonably priced.

Attached is a PDF of the MDF wasteboard dimensions. It is for the half-piece of course, I believe the gap between the two halves should be assumed to be 0.00 so you can simply mirror along the right-hand edge and have a drawing for your aluminum.
I got the PDF from C3D so it's legit :)

The drawing for the one-piece wasteboard is S3099, which can be found on the Shapeoko 3 Drawings page.

Hmmmmm.... That drawing seems to have gone missing, although it is listed on the Drawing Page the file isn't at the destination of the link.

Huh, I wonder where it went? Here is my copy from 9 months ago; I assume nothing has changed.

Perfect! Got the print and I appreciate it. Did you buy a flat plate? If so where did you source it from.

Thanks for taking the time to send the link.

No, I did not buy a metal plate; so I don't have a source for one. I bought 3/4" HDPE off of eBay. The particular brand I got was King StarBoard, which machined really well (compared to a regular cutting board HDPE that I got as a wasteboard). You can read some details in my build log.
King StarBoard® is the original marine-grade high-density polyethylene sheet and the industry standard. It is the product of a proprietary process called K-Stran™, the most advanced manufacturing process for superior flatness and consistency. King StarBoard is environmentally stabilized to withstand the harshest marine conditions. It will not warp, rot, or delaminate when exposed to humidity or water. King StarBoard is easy to fabricate with standard woodworking tools and requires little or no finishing.

Here's how I did my aluminum table.
Setting up the main table wasn't too bad. drilling and tapping all the holes was quite tedious. It has proven to work pretty well so far! I am very pleased with it.
Let me know if you have any questions.
