Would you sell your shapeoko for a mill?

Post by Gamble » Tue Jul 26, 2016 1:57 pm

Would any of you consider selling your shapeoko in favor of a small cnc mill?

I've always wanted one but not sure I see the advantage right now. Smaller work area, mainly doing 1 piece at a time, more complex software etc

I'd love to have a small mill (or more likely a CNC lathe) for doing metal-work --- doubt I'd be willing to give up my SO3 for one though --- I've been able to do some small projects in aluminum quite handily on the SO3: http://www.shapeoko.com/projects/project.php?id=154

I have been wanting a cnc lathe for a long time. I'm looking at a little sherline cnc mill and cnc lathe. I have no idea how to use them though, but I think mach3 has a wizard for the lathe for basic stuff just not sure if it does for the mill.

I'd love to have a CNC mill, but the "real" ones (like a Tormach) start out at about 10x the cost of a Shapeoko 3.

I think I am with twforeman. If I was going to sell the Shapeoko it would be for something like a Tormach. But then again If i had the cheddar to pick up one of those I'd probably Keep the Shapeoko and just convert it into a full time Laser etcher. :D

I didn't mean a tormach, I meant something like a taig or sherline or any other mini cnc mill

What would I gain by going to a sherline cnc mill? Anything worth it? I can do it for about $2k with basic tooling and controller, motors and all.

You would be trading work envelope for accuracy and material capability.

Much better accuracy with a mill and you can use real vices/cut steel.

I was actually thinking about putting a vice on my shapeoko

I did put a low profile vice on my SO1, but never had occasion to use it (though it was useful as a press for putting in the magnets on the dust shoe).

I have a vise on my Shapeoko. It's a woodworking vise though.

I'd like to get a better, low-profile metal vise for it.
