Webcam setup for remote viewing?

Post by LTEPM » Thu Aug 25, 2016 1:58 pm

I want to set up a web cam for viewing the SO3 when I need to step away. Some of the jobs I run are 4 hours in duration.

I have a dedicated PC desktop with Windows 10, and am only concerned with viewing it while at home.

Is there an easy way to set this up? I'd like to be able to view on my iPhone, iPad, and occasionally on another PC.

Thanks

A Raspberry Pi with OctoPi. It has a webcam server installed on it by default. It'll automatically load it, if it detects a supported webcam is connected. You can access the webcam stream directly via a special link that doesn't involve an IP address, if your router supports it, like this (http://octopi.local/webcam/?action=stream). It's super easy to setup and I have a couple in my shop for this purpose.

Would the Raspberry Pi Zero be able to handle streaming a USB camera?

RPi Zero is as capable as RPi 1, I think.
But the lack of network connection and regular USB connector for Wifi plug makes the "normal" RPi layout more suitable?

I second an IP cam. I have an inexpensive TrendNet camera that I plug in from time to time when needed. It's wireless. I use my cell phone (android) and an IP cam app that lets me view what's going on. Pretty simple stuff.
