New/old forum member

Hi everyone,

I've been a member here since 2014 but have been inactive for the past 4 years.... I had started a thread located at viewtopic.php?t=4304 and it kind of "fell through the cracks", my fault since I stopped logging in.

But now I want to really start using my SkapeOko machine and I guess I would need your help.
I own a ShapeOko 2, I know it's an old model, but I would like to know:

- Is this machine still usable with recent software or do I need to buy a ShapeOko 3 (or other newer machines)?
- Can I "upgrade" my machine in any way, to make it more "modern"?
- I read that some new software will only work with grbl 1.1, but I also read that my controller can only have grbl 0.9. Will I be limited by this?

Any thoughts/comments/ideas would be greatly appreciated.

I would suggest heading over the the Inventables forum. They are the keepers of all things new with Shapeoko 2 and X-Carve (The 2's twin)

You can do plenty with an S2. I did lots of good work with my S1/S2 hybrid.

The software should mostly work with your S2. You might have issues flashing the latest GRBL to your board, but I'm not an expert on that.

The CAD/CAM stuff doesn't care what machine you are using, the standard Shapeoko post-processor should work.

The S2 is not as rigid as the S3, so you can push it as hard, but you can still do good work with it.

You can use Carbide Create with the machine as it is.

Upgrades are as listed at: --- you could check in on the Inventables forums too if you wish to look into an upgrade to an X-Carve.

You should be able to upgrade to 1.1 see:
