Ridgid R2401 with ShapeOko

Post by lutorm » Sun Apr 21, 2013 6:59 pm

Hey all,

I got my ShapeOko kit a few weeks ago, and after testing it I quickly realized that my old Dremel was not up to the task. However, I also had a Ridgid R2401 trim router lying around, so I decided to give that a try. I managed to shoehorn it into the standard spindle mount so I could at least cut new mounting plates out of 1/2" Delrin. See pictures at http://blog.familjenjonsson.org/blog/20 ... -shapeoko/.

It seems to work nicely. It's certainly miles beyond the dremel. I do need to get a 1/8" collet for it so I can use thinner bits, and I need to address the stiffness of the setup. But it's a good start.

cheers,

/Patrik

I have a 2401 in my ShapeOko, it seems to work pretty well.

Your mounts look pretty much like mine.

You can see how I dealt with the dust shoe issue here.

Oh, and I bought a set of these adapter bushings to use 1/8" and 3/32" bits. 3/32" is a pretty standard end mill shank diameter.

Indeed they do! 8-) I need to make something like that dust shoe. So you still have the router fan blowing down into the shoe?

Looks a little closer.

The shoe mounting plate is attached to the router mount with 1/2" spacers so there is a gap. The plate that the shoe mounts to deflects the air out the sides and the skirt on the shoe contains the vacuum (mostly.)

It works pretty well.

They certainly seem to hold the router “ridgidly”.
 This was great, thanks for the laugh. Looks like a nice setup, is that a variable speed router? I'm interested in a dremel upgrade, but from what I've heard here, the dewault is very loud.

All routers are loud.

I did just buy a new Craftsman shop vac and was pleasantly surprised with how quiet it is.

You should have been in my basement the other day though.

I had my Rigid 2401 running on my ShapeOko, along with the old (LOUD) shop vac.

Then I turned on my woodworking dust collector and fired up the table saw. Talk about noisy...

I have this router and can't seem to find any files. Would either of you be willing to share a link to your mounts that I could download? Thanks!
