For the Makita, one has to get an aftermarket collet in order to have a size other than 1/4" (6.35mm) (not sure what the standard size is in Europe, (8mm? 6.35mm?) but they only get one choice as well w/o using an adapter.
The Elaire precision collets seems to be made to a higher standard, or better steel --- see the thread on it here: http://www.shapeoko.com/forum/viewtopic.php?f=8&t=3445 esp. the post: http://www.shapeoko.com/forum/viewtopic ... =30#p26665
Remember, we’re taking a mass-market consumer item and re-purposing it for and industrialized rôle --- frankly, I’m surprised they work as well as they do, and it says a lot about the standards of the companies whose machines are well-suited for this (Makita, DeWalt, but c.f., Bosch quality issues as noted on the Precise Bits site).

Kress's (German) come with an 8mm collet. Haven't purchased any other EU brand yet, so can't say for sure if that's applicable to others as well.WillAdams wrote:... not sure what the standard size is in Europe, (8mm? 6.35mm?) but they only get one choice as well w/o using an adapter.

Re-reading through this thread it seems as if in some regions at least, the Makita collet is 8mm, and not very well engineered. Getting Elaire collets would be a bigger gain for people w/ such collets.

Are there any instructions for mounting the Makita? I just finished assembling my Shapeoko and don't know how to attach the router.

You should have an adapter ring to get from the 69mm mount down to the 65mm Makita.
Otherwise it’s the same as the Dewalt.
