Makita RT0701 Material feed info

Post by sectorix » Tue Aug 19, 2014 11:45 pm

Hi,

I wonder if anyone ran a benchmark for different material feed parameters of a shapeoko with the Makita RT0701 on it.
the wiki has some data on DW660 but even with that, its only for 1/8" bits and I want 1/4. I am guessing you can go deeper and faster with a RT0701, but I have no clue.

my interest is in materials for this are:
1. wood/mahogany
2. wood/hard-maple
3. wood/(any hard wood really)
4. wood/plywood

I don't think there's an appreciable difference between the DW660 @ 600 Watts and the Makita @ 700.

The reasons to use the Makita are:

- less runout
- metal body
- better cooling, esp. at slow speeds if cutting plastics

I did provide numbers for the Harbor Freight Trim Router for Ipé http://www.shapeoko.com/wiki/index.php/ ... s#Ip.C3.AA

and used those successfully w/ my Makita --- might be able to go a bit faster, but haven't had time to re-try the test cut linked to on the PrciseBits site at: http://www.shapeoko.com/wiki/index.php/ ... and_Speeds

Also, good speed control, which is important.

so for hard wood and for ply wood , and a 1/4" bit, how fast and how deep would you go?
i understand 30Krpm, but not sure about the rest

Well, the theoretical values for Ipê are listed as:
Theoretical: 1/4 inch carbide bit try 12-18000 rpm and 762--2,286mm/min (30--90 ipm). 1/8 inch depth per pass. Leave about .01 inches for a full depth finish pass at the lower ipm range. Depending on the machine you may need faster or slower. You might also need a different step down.
I'd suggest the faster speed, somewhere between 3 and 4 (though many people using Shapeokos just leave the speed setting at maximum until there's a reason to change it) and the lower feed (762mm) and try the Precise Bits test:

http://www.precisebits.com/tutorials/ca ... speeds.htm

which I noted using here: http://www.shapeoko.com/forum/viewtopic ... 072#p27072 --- the Precise Bits folks do have an interesting suggestion for setting the spindle speed, but I couldn't find a speed where the sound differed --- the Makita is wonderfully well-made.

This is the first tiem that anyone told me you could do 1/8 passes. I am very interested. will try this weekend.
