Interest in an adapter for the SO3 mount for the Makita?

Post by WillAdams » Sat Mar 07, 2015 11:11 pm

After thinking on this, I've decided that I don't want to worry about whether or no the Mount is sufficiently adjustable --- I've got an idea for an adapter (pretty obvious / simple), and of course, the price goes down the more one orders.

If you're interested, respond to the poll and we'll see how things work out.

Managed to find a reasonable price, so I should be able to make some available once I have my machine.

Hopefully they'll fit in a flat rate box.

I could be interested, but what is the benefit of the Makita over the DeWalt?

The reasons why I chose the Makita:

- there's a local dealer (I mean really local, family-owned, been in business since the Civil War, actually has staff which know / understand the product)
- less expensive (list price comparison --- the Makita cost more at the local dealer than the Dewalt would've been from Lowes)
- had an affordable collet option which I wanted to support (see the thread on the custom collet for Makita)

The Dewalt is arguably a better choice if one is willing to spend the extra money for the Precise Bits ER collets --- the Makita is the budget option, or should be considered so.

I assume the level of precision on the ER "precision" grade is plenty for a Shapeoko,?

I believe that that would depend on what sort of work one wanted to do.

I'd like to think that the new machine design would allow one to take advantage of the higher precision grades if one wanted to do PCB and other exacting work --- but that's just a hunch.

To return to the adapter, maybe I should've included a third option:

- would prefer to purchase a mount which would properly fit the Makita and which would include the same accessory holes as the Inventables mount.

Okay, I’ve got one made up — it’s a bit rough looking, and I want to clean it up a bit (mental note, buy new hacksaw blades), but it seems to work. Will post photos tomorrow, but this may be a moot point, since the front page now lists the Makita as a supported router.

Anyone have suggestions on a project which would use a slightly less than 3 foot length of 65mm aluminum tubing?

I've got almost 3 feet of the tubing and each mount is 1 3/23nds tall. Contact Edward first though, he may have a surprise for you.
