I was intrigued by this post, after some searching it seems others forums mention the Kress FME 800 (800 watts) which is a less powerful and lighter 1.4kg version and yet still retains the full wave electronic speed control. This would be cheaper and yet slightly more powerful than the Metabo equivalent I was enamoured by. :D

Post feedback when you have it, nothing better than a real world test: vibration noise...

I got mine, thank you santa.
Now question, how do you mount it? I ordered their block together with tthe tool but I can think of an "easy" and proper way to mount it.

Hello,

The issue is that DW660 is not available in Europe (not for 220v).
I've been using a Kress 800 for the past week and the only thing I can say : it's really amazing. Fast, powerfull and accurate tool.
Kress tools are specifically designed for milling machines. Mine has a runnout < 0.083mm.
I'm still working on the spindle mount, but right now I'm using a 35mm oak mount :) My 11mm Delrin was hard enough. I plan on making a 10mm aluminium mount as described here http://www.shapeoko.com/forum/viewtopic.php?f=11&t=1052

I haven't even cut one yet. I will give it a try pretty soon (actually I would like to mount my home switches first, in case something goes wrong when milling aluminium).
I'll let you know when it's done.
For know I'm using the mount as shown on pictures below. Works like a charm so far.

I'm still building my shapeoko but i already bought a Kress 1050-1 to have a good start. The 1050 is kind of a standard spindle for lower to medium price cnc routers here in germany (Kress is a german company). You get the 1050 here in nearly every online shop that's got something to do with cnc routers.

Additionally i bought a standard holder for 43mm shafts (which is the outer shaft of the Kress 1050). It looks like that: http://www.ebay.de/itm/200839357158?ssP ... 500wt_1001 - i modified it to fit the Makerslide on the z-axis. I can post a photo of that tomorrow if you like.

If you're planning to invest in a spindle that will fit your shapeoko from standard size up to whatever you like it to extend i suggest you go with the 1050 - it's a future safe investment.

Seems like a very good machine indeed, but how much noise does it make compared to the "dremel" 135W thingie?
I measured my "dremel" with a noise meter on my phone to about 90dB. Those noisemeasuring apps do have a reputation of giving a higher ratio than the actual noise is, so I do not know if that is correct.

I don't know about the Kress 1050, but I have a Kress 800 and it's pretty noisy when running at full speed.
Do not expect to work without a noise cancelling helmet.

According to the manuals, the 800 and 1050 has the same noise levels..
No, I am not expecting to get rid of my earmuffs.

But I was hoping it was not even worse than the noise level I have now.. :-?
