Here is a forum thread about building a filament extruder.

Pla pellets avaliable

Pla pellets are now available at: http://osprintingllc.com/
I don't own the place but am just a very happy customer.

2 pounds for $7.00 is still cheaper that $39.00 for 1Kg of filament. After the 7th spool the extruder has paid for itself.

An extruder like this:

On thingiverse:

with a complete BOM.

Ok why would I be interested in a filament extruder and PLA pellets. Well it all started with this article:
http://3dtopo.com/lostPLA/
And I love my ShapeOko and I am getting started on building 2 others - one for woodworking a 4x4 system and the second will be for machining metal especially aluminum. I have a foundry that I can melt the metal and pour it into castings. SOOOOO..... use the filament extruder to create the filament that goes into the extruder on my ShapeOko and create the casting model I need. Then coat the model with plaster and sand. Melt out the plastic and I have the same thing as a "Lost Wax" casting. Pour in the "HOT" metal and wait for it to cool. Then take the part and remove the filler channels. Take the part over to the CNC machine and finish milling to a complete parts. Just so much magic that I can not contain myself.

More toys....

Truly amazing what we can do in our own garages nowadays.

Also this is what 50 pounds of PLA looks like. Now that book that was around here said something about measuring out some and getting is hot. Stupid book there has to be more than that to make this work.

I have started a blog on building my version of a filament extruder. It is based upon the work of Filabot, Lyman and Tim's work. The same type of machine. I have a compete woodworking and metal working shop but what I wanted to do is create one that can be completed in most peoples garage. So no slicing of pipes or custom plastic parts to make. Oh there is one plastic part - a 2 liter bottle and you will have to empty it yourself. The bottle will hold 1320 grams of pellets and so should work fine for holding 1Kg of pellets for conversion. I will also be putting up a BOM once I have it working but it makes no sense to post something that would be changing until it is done. I also want to build the Lyman Filament winder and have some ideas as to how to link the two units so that it would take care of its self. I also want to setup a camera to watch it work so that I can see what the mice in the shop are doing.

just to let you know there is a kickstarter based on the Filastruder by the developer here:

I pledged for one Filastruder.
Interesting to see the range of pellets and colorants to be available in their shop.
Found some polycarbonate pellets, as they say that it is possible to extrude beyond 300°C (and probably really more).

I played around with a setup like yours while building a lyman extruder. Do you also have issues with clogging at the bottleneck?

How is filament diameter consistency?
